Armenian churches of Tbilisi were filled with joyful spirit of Median Day (Mijink)
According to the liturgical calendar of the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church, the period of Great Lent has reached its midpoint. On March 11, 2026, the 24th day of Great Lent was observed, a day known as Mijink, marking the halfway point of the Lenten fast.
The Cathedral of Saint George in Tbilisi and the Saint Etchmiadzin Church in Avlabari were well prepared to celebrate the occasion. At the diocesan cathedral, the evening Response of Souls Service was offered under the presidency of His Grace Bishop Kirakos Davtyan, Primate of the Armenian Diocese in Georgia. In both churches, the clergy blessed the attendees and reflected on the significance of the day, wishing the faithful to continue the second half of Lent with love and devotion, leading up to the Feast of the Glorious Resurrection, which this year will be celebrated on April 5, according to the calendar of the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church.
On the day of Mijink, according to popular tradition, Armenian housewives bake gata or bagharj, placing a coin or a small cross inside. Whoever finds the surprise is believed to have good luck for the year. The beautiful celebration of this church and folk feast was enriched by the contribution of the cross-bearers of the church and the faithful, who brought gata and prepared gifts in honor of the popular tradition
